Do I Need an Eye Exam?
Eye examinations by our doctors in New Hyde Park are extremely important in maintaining good eye health and vision. Many eye serious eye problems, such as glaucoma, do not cause any symptoms until irreparable damage has been done. In these cases, early detection is the only way to protect your vision.
Eye exams should be done every two years if you are younger and in good health. We recommend that a person over the age of 40 make an appointment with an ophthalmologist at Gary S. Hirshfield MD Eye Physician and Surgeon in New Hyde Park every year, as well as those with diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of eye disease (no matter your age).
During your eye exam, Dr. Hirshfield will talk with you about your medical history, and anything that may be a factor in the results of your examination. You will be tested for healthy eye muscle movement, your ability to distinguish colors, and visual acuity to see if you need eyeglasses or contact lenses. Your eyes will be fully dilated, and Dr. Hirshfield will look into your retina, as well as measure your eye pressure to test for glaucoma. Dr. Hirshfield or another of our highly trained eye doctors will address any other health concerns and answer any questions you may have.
Results of a normal eye examination include: 20/20 vision; good peripheral vision; ability to distinguish colors; normal-appearing structures of the external eye; absence of cataracts, glaucoma or retinal disorders, such as age-related macular degeneration.
