Macular Degeneration Care

What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a condition that affects the macula, the central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. The macula allows us to read, drive, recognize faces, and see fine detail. When the macula is damaged, central vision becomes blurred or distorted, while side (peripheral) vision is usually preserved.

Macular degeneration most commonly occurs with aging and is often referred to as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). An experienced ophthalmologist can diagnose the condition, monitor changes over time, and recommend appropriate treatments to help preserve vision for as long as possible.

How the Macula Works

The retina lines the back of the eye and acts like film in a camera, capturing light and sending visual signals to the brain. The macula sits at the center of the retina and is densely packed with cells that provide high-resolution vision. For clear central vision, the macula must remain healthy and well nourished.

Anything that disrupts the structure or blood supply of the macula can interfere with the brain’s ability to form a clear image.

Dry (Non-Neovascular) Macular Degeneration

The most common form of macular degeneration is dry macular degeneration. This condition develops gradually and is caused by thinning of the macular tissue and the buildup of small deposits called drusen beneath the retina. Many patients notice mild blurring, difficulty reading in low light, or a need for brighter illumination.

Although there is currently no surgical treatment for dry macular degeneration, careful monitoring and lifestyle management are essential. In certain patients, specific nutritional supplements may help slow progression. Determining who benefits from these supplements — and which formulation is appropriate — requires guidance from an ophthalmologist familiar with retinal disease.

Wet (Neovascular) Macular Degeneration

Wet macular degeneration is less common but more serious. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the macula and leak fluid or blood, leading to rapid vision changes. Symptoms may include sudden distortion of straight lines, dark or blank spots in central vision, or a noticeable decline in visual clarity.

Early detection is critical. Fortunately, modern treatments using targeted medications can often stop or slow vision loss when started promptly. These treatments are typically performed in the office and are aimed at controlling abnormal blood vessel growth and preserving remaining vision.

Ongoing Care and Monitoring

Macular degeneration is a chronic condition that requires ongoing care. Regular eye exams, retinal imaging, and symptom monitoring play a key role in protecting vision. While macular degeneration can affect daily activities, many patients maintain independence and quality of life with proper management and support.

This overview highlights common forms of macular degeneration and general treatment approaches. Comprehensive evaluation and individualized care are essential. A full range of diagnostic and treatment options for macular degeneration are available through an experienced ophthalmology practice.
